English: Writing (Handwriting and Composition)
Subject intent: At William Cassidi C. E. Aided Primary School we believe writing is an essential skill which pervades all subjects and is a necessary life skill which enables each individual to lead a full and enriched life. On a functional level writing enables the completion of daily tasks but is also a vehicle for creativity, expression of ideas and enjoyment. We aim, through practise, for each individual to develop a clear handwriting style that is legible for all to access which allows them to quickly and fluently express their thoughts. We acknowledge the strong link between reading and vocabulary, spelling including phonics, morphology (word structure), and orthography (spelling structure) of words which we view as essential skills in aiding writing fluency. By providing children with planned enriching experiences, stories, plays, poetry, non-fiction, text books and discussions, they will assimilate knowledge and understanding and so develop their compositional skills In addition, by systematically teaching children how to plan, revise and evaluate their writing alongside a developing awareness of audience, purpose and context, and with a wide knowledge of vocabulary and grammar each individual will become a successful writer and ready for the challenges of life and the next phase of their education. |
Early Years
In Nursery and Reception, our curriculum is based on the EYFS framework document and 'Development Matters’. It is taught through topics, which are adapted and developed to suit children’s interests. For Nursery children, we have identified key skills in each area for us to focus on, whilst in Reception we have identified skills to teach and develop during each half-term to progress towards meeting the Early Learning Goals.

Handwriting links closely with Physical Development.
In Reception, phonics is taught through the Success For All scheme. Nursery children follow the First Steps to Phonics scheme.
